Actress. She was an American stage actress before accepting roles in the silent movies. Her education consisted of Washburn Preparatory Academy in Topeka, Broadway High School in Seattle, studying voice and piano at Cohn's Conservatory of Music in Seattle, and classes at the Fine Arts Department at Washburn College. She appeared on stage in Seattle with some success. In 1914 she married David Willis Bowes, the couple had a son and officially filed for divorce on September 14, 1920. Her film debut was in the 1920 "To Please One Woman." She and her son appeared in the 1921 film "What Do Men Want?" She was named as one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1922. In 1923 she started using the stage name to Claire Windsor. With various film studios, her career as an actress was a success. In 1925 she married actor Bert Lytell, but the couple divorced in 1927. She never remarried, but her romantic life was well-published in the media. Like many other silent film actors, she made several talkies throughout the 1930s but could never recapture the success of her earlier years as a silent screen actress. She toured with Al Jolson in his stage show in 1933. On April 12, 1943, she legally changed her name to Claire Windsor and her son took the surname as well. In her retirement, she was able to turn her attention to her own artistic talents and found new expression in the art of ceramics and landscape painting. She lived long enough to see the public gain interest in silent movies in the 1950s. In 1960 she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
