He was the husband of SARAH RHODA CLAYTON BRASHEARS. He was named after Major Elijah Dawkins who was his father's commanding officer in the War of 1812. His father had great esteem for Major Dawkins and named his 1st son after him. When the rest of his brothers moved to Missouri and Georgia, Major Dawkins stayed in South Carolina and live on the farm that was originally granted to his Grandfather, William Gowan Brashears. M. D. was a well known farmer in the Holly Springs Community of Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

Note: He was named after Major Dawkins but he became known as "Dockins", a corupting of "Dawkins". He is listed in some documents as M. D. of Major Dockins Brashears.
