Chapter Six: William "Newton" Anderson Family

The specific details on the family of "Uncle Newt" are somewhat limited, since he had only one adopted daughter. Family members seem to refer most frequently to the first marriage of "Uncle Newt and Em Em," even though he and his second wife died over 25 years after Aunt Em's death.

According to the 1900 census, Newt and Em married around 1877, when they both were 27 years old. This date may be too late, in light of the family tradition that they lived at the place later known as the "Hebe Anderson farm" until they turned the farm over to brother James and moved to Kouts. Since James married in December of 1876, this would seem a far more likely date for him to take over the farm. Though this question might be resolved by a careful studying of the deeds, the editor is living too far from Porter Co. to undertake such work at this time. At any rate, Newt later lived in Kouts, and ran the elevator there.

Sometime after Aunt Em's death, Newt made the acquaintance of Alice Karney from Chicago, and marriage followed. They later adopted Mary, who currently lives in Bremen, IN, near her son. No official records have been found for either of Newt's marriages, nor other dates for his wives.
