JEREMIAH HOGGARD JR.

Jeremiah David Hoggard Jr., 74, passed away March 20, 2009, unexpectedly, from complications with diabetes. He was born Sept. 4, 1934, in Hackensack, N.J., to J. David and Marguerite Hoggard, both now deceased.

He moved with his father and brother, Donald, to Las Vegas in 1942, after his mother passed away. He graduated from Las Vegas High School in 1952, and then attended college at West Virginia State University, where he met and married Jacqueline Taylor. Three sons were born from this union. In 1969, he married Dianne Leier; and one son was born from this union. David worked at the Community College of Southern Nevada (CCSN), currently College of Southern Nevada (CSN), as dean of several different departments, until retiring in 1994. He also held the position of acting director of CCSN for nearly a year while a nationwide search was conducted for a new director. He returned to the College of Southern Nevada and worked as a night dean until his death.

David was active with the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. It was a huge part of his life and his fraternity brothers will miss him greatly.

Politics always interested him. He worked in the background for numerous democratic candidates and spent an entire summer in Washington, D.C., writing grants for various programs. David was one of Nevada's delegates to the Democratic National Convention in 2000. He was a member of the local NAACP, and manager for the 2000 Clark County Census Bureau.

Education was a tremendous part of his life, instilled by his stepmother, Mabel Hoggard, who was the first black school teacher in the state of Nevada and a strong community activist. His father, J. David Hoggard Sr., also a community leader, was the director of the Economic Opportunity Board (EOB) for many years.

His greatest love was his family.

David is survived by his sons, Marvin (Denell) and Jason (Ambriel); grandchildren, Nicole Hoggard and Mekia McIntyre; stepgrandmother, Verlia Davis Hoggard; former wives, Jacqueline Hoggard, Dianne Hoggard Fichter and Connie Cook; and longtime companion, Renee Davis. He also leaves behind a host of beloved family members and beloved friends, all who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, J. David and Marguerite Hoggard; stepmother, Mabel Wims Hoggard; brother, Donald; and sons, Keith and Michael.

Visitation will be from noon-6 p.m. Thursday, March 26. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, both at Palm Mortuary, 6701 N. Jones Blvd. (Jones and I-215 N.). The family asks that all gifts and memorials are in the form of donations to The Public Education Foundation Scholarship Program, Michael J. Hoggard Memorial Scholarship, 3360 W. Sahara Ave., Suite 160, Las Vegas, NV 89102, www.ccpef.org.
