JAMES CARDWELL

James V. Cardwell, of Las Vegas, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009, at the age of 64. He was born in Great Falls, Mont., Sept. 8, 1944, to James and Lilian Cardwell.

Jim earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon and his master's degree from Pepperdine University.

As the son of a military family, Jim lived all over the U.S. and in Japan, and later served his country in the U.S. Army for three years of active duty beginning September 1963. He was stationed in San Francisco and Heidelberg, Germany, and specialized as a sharp shooter, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. His active service was followed by three years as a reservist.

Jim relocated from Oregon to Las Vegas in the late 1970s, where he worked for many years in real estate in the booming Las Vegas Valley.

In the mid 1980s, Jim was very instrumental in both gaming and residential development in Laughlin. He also honed his business skills by owning a small and successful manufacturing business.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Linda; and brother-in-law, Dale Minnick of Seattle.

He is survived by the three children he loved, Taylor Cardwell (31) of Las Vegas, Justen Cardwell (11) and Alena Cardwell (8), of San Diego; and one grandson, Chase Cardwell (7) of Las Vegas.

Jim loved to cook, go to concerts, work out and play sports. He was a gifted pianist and loved the outdoors, especially the beach.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation in his name, or in his children's names, to the Torrey Pines Docent Society in support of the programs and projects within the Torrey Pines State Reserve in San Diego, one of Jim's favorite places.

The family wishes to express appreciation to its many loving and supportive friends. In honor of Jim's decorated service to our country, burial services will be at noon Friday, May 15, at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City.
