FUNERAL MONDAY FOR DONALD KUNKEL
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. John J. McGuirk officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery under direction of the Fisch Funeral Home.
Mr. Kunkel was born April 10, 1930 at rural Remsen, the son of Arthur and Margaret (Rodesch) Kunkel. He was raised and educated in the Remsen area and was engaged in farming and carpentry in the Remsen area. He entered the Army in 1952 and served in Germany during the Korean War, being discharged in 1954.
He married Mavis Klein on Aug. 25, 1958 at Remsen. They farmed near Remsen and Donald continued to do carpentry work. They retired and moved into Remsen on March 9, 1994.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3328 of Remsen and was post adjutant.
Graveside military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 220 and V.F.W. Post 3328.
Surviving are his wife Mavis of Remsen; three sons, Keith, Mark and Glen, all of Remsen; three daughters, Mrs. Dave (Chris) Heuertz of Remsen, Mrs. Leonard (Kelli) Flack of Sioux City and Mrs. Jon (Tricia) Gensink of Maurice; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Richard Kunkel.
Casket bearers were Dave Jungers, Brad and Patrick Klein, Daniel Kunkel and Bill and Paul Ruba.
Knights of Columbus honorary pallbearers were Daryl Gengler, Clarence and Gerald Harpenau, Marvin Kunkel, Ronald Ruhland and Mark Schroeder.
