Azariah was the son of Joseph Akers, a shoemaker born 1814 in New Jersey, and Sarah Ann Akers, born 1823 in New Jersey. The family was in Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey in 1850 and 1860, and in New Brunswick, Middlesex Co., New Jersey in 1870, although Azariah was working on the farm of Moses H. Burroughs in Hopewell Twp., Mercer Co., New Jersey.

He married Virginia A. Lanning on Jan. 1, 1874 in Lambertville.

Thanks so much to Dennis Sutton for uploading marriage and other extracts from The Hunterdon County Democrat.

Azariah and Virginia had at least these children: Sarah Elizabeth, born about 1875 (died 1880); Emma, born 1877; Samuel, born 1879; twins Howard and Mary, born 1889; all in New Jersey.

He was described as a teamster and a coachman.

I would be more than happy to transfer this memorial to a family member. Please click on my name, below, to email me.
