Daniel A. Lauer (Lower) was born in Bavaria to Jacob Lauer and Mary Kendel Lauer. [German records available through familysearch.org show Daniel Lauer being born 13 March 1813. For purposes of this page, the birthdate Daniel used throughout his life will be used.]

Daniel immigrated to the USA, working as a deck hand for his passage aboard the sailing ship Silvie De Grasse. After a 58 day voyage, he arrived in New York City on December 26,1835. He was given the "Lower" spelling of his last name by immigration personnel upon his arrival, and used the "Lower" spelling throughout his life in the US. His parents and siblings immigrated somewhat later, and kept the "Lauer" spelling of their name.

Upon arrival in the US, Daniel worked in New York City as a laborer on Wall Street. After working for a year, his parents and his brothers and sisters arrived in New York and they moved together to Seneca County, Ohio. In Ohio, he met Abigail DeLong, and they were married July 11, 1838. They moved to Rome City, Indiana, where Daniel worked on the canal being built there. They lived frugally until, in the fall of 1839, they were able to acquire 40 acres of government land in Elkhart twp. They cleared the land of its timber and built a log home and outbuildings. In October of 1839, Daniel, Abigail, and three month old Elizabeth moved from Rome City to their land in Elkhart twp. By the time of his death in 1897 he owned at least 700 acres. (Information from Alvord's History of Noble County, IN) Daniel also built a sawmill on the Elkhart River. This business was in great demand as farmers were clearing their land and needed lumber from the trees to build their houses and other farm buildings.

Abigail died in 1847, leaving 5 children under the age of 8, Elizabeth, William D, Jacob N, Margaret, and Mary Anna. Daniel then married (8 Feb 1849) Elizabeth Kreglow. They had five children: Martha Jane, Daniel David, Abigail, John Adam, and Barbara.

Following Elizabeth's death in 1871, Daniel married Emily L. King Grogg, who had two children from a prior marriage, Nettie and Oliver Grogg. Emily survived Daniel at his death in 1897.

Notes on the Lower/Lauer Cemetery: The cemetery is located on the original 40 acre plot of land owned by Daniel Lower. While Daniel used the Lower spelling throughout his life in the US, and Lower was the surname used by Abigail and Elizabeth during their marriages to Daniel, on this monument (probably erected in about the 1950's as a replacement for the original markers), the original spelling of Daniel's surname was given to them all. There are additional errors, one being Daniel's age. the inscribed age at death (32) for Elizabeth is likely an error. In Daniel's family bible, Elizabeth's birthdate is entered as September 30, 1831, making her age 39 at her death. Also, Abigail's death date is inscribed incorrectly as 1849 when it is actually 1847. The source of accurate data is Daniel Lower's bible and his obituary.
