Bill was born in Charlottesville, Virginia, on April 14, 1926, a devoted son to Arthur and Nellie Mary Gibson.
He served honorably in World War II from January 1945 until July 1946. He graduated from Meriwether Lewis High School in 1947. He was a beloved member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Ivy. After 30 years of faithful service, he retired from ConAgra and Teamsters Local Union 29. He was a Charlottesville Volunteer fireman for 20 years, an avid bowler and raving fan of University of Virginia football.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Verley Lawrence and Luther Franklin Gibson; and one brother-in-law, Milton Haney.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alma Walton Gibson; his children, David William Gibson and his wife, Kay, of Norfolk, Virginia, Donald Ray Gibson and his wife, Beth, Dennis Wayne Gibson and Mary Fox, Terri Gibson Morris and her husband, Scott, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Tracy Dawn McDonald and her husband, Matt; his sisters, Nellie Louise Haney and Frances Gibson Loose and her husband, Herman F.W. Loose; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the Teague Chapel. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Teague Funeral Home.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers, desired memorial contributions be made to St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 351, Ivy, Virginia 22945.
