Virginia L. Buchanan, 62, Springfield, MO, passed away at her home the morning of October 22, 2008 after a hard-fought battle with cancer, complicated by lupus.
Born November 17, 1945 in Winfield, KS to Harley and Barbara Parsons, Virginia attended school in Dexter, KS and graduated from Winfield High School. She then received a Bachelor's degree from Southwestern College in Winfield, followed by a Masters degree from Emporia State College in Emporia, KS. After a number of years in Colombia, South America Virginia moved to the Washington, DC area where she married John E. Buchanan. They moved to Houston, TX, and then to Springfield. Virginia was an employee of the Mercy Health Care System Shared Accounts Payable Services in Springfield prior to her illness.

Virginia is survived by her parents, her husband, her sister, Mrs. Treva Andrea and her husband, Ronald, of Glen Allen,VA, her step-daughter, Teresa Buchanan, of Fremont, CA, her step-son, David Buchanan and his wife, Jodi, and their three children, Lea, Ava and Matthew, all of Bentonville, AR. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in KS, IA and Texas.

Virginia was noted for her research in family genealogy, and she kept the various families informed of all their long, lost relatives. She was often seen by the neighbors working with her flowers. She was a member of the Iris Society of Springfield. She was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Houston Chapter of the Lupus Foundation of America.

The family asks that friends join them for a memorial service at the Walnut Lawn Funeral Home at 2001 W. Walnut lawn St, Springfield at 2 pm, Sunday, October 26. An additional Memorial Service will be at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield, KS at 2pm, on Tuesday October 28, 2008 with inturnment at Highland Cemetery. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, people make contributions to the American Cancer Society or the Lupus Foundation of America.
