Cornelius entered service at Homerville on June 26, 1918 and was discharged May 16, 1919. His WW1 service cards list is birth at "Mainard" on May 9, 1896. There was a "Maynard" in Monroe County at the time of his birth , but am not certain that would be the location.

His father, Woodson, was born in North Carolina and was still there in 1880, although his father's birth varies greatly from that on the tombstone- 1844. It shows up in various sources from 1851 to 1862. Woodson and Nancy thrift married in Ware County in 1886 and it is highly unlikely they passed through Monroe County before settling in Fargo.

Cornelius married Mary Griffis at Columbia county Florida in 1918. Mary may have previously been married to James Geiger of Nassau County, Florida as she had a son, Richard Geiger born about 1909 whom was living with his mother Mary and Cornelius at the time of the 1920 census.
