Jean Plowden McKay
Columbia

Mary Jean Plowden McKay, formerly of 2913 Wheat Street, died early Saturday morning, October 14, 2006, at Providence Hospital.

Jean, affectionately known as "Mammy" to her loved ones, was born on December 3 in Columbia and was the daughter of Wylie and Pearl Plowden.

Jean attended high school in Simpsonville and was president of each her classes. She enjoyed sports and was a top player on the basketball team. She attended Lander College, where she also served as class president. She received her associate degree in secretarial science. She had lived in Columbia for the past 60 years.

She was married to Raymond E. McKay Sr., who predeceased her 32 years ago. She helped him manage McKay's Exxon on Devine Street for many years. After his death, Jean devoted her life to her children and grandchildren and taught them all the true meaning of love. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

Jean worked as a secretary for many to the United Methodist Bishop Paul Hardin. She later worked for John C.B. Smith Real Estate until her retirement. After retirement, she continued being active. She was a devoted volunteer at Palmetto Richland Memorial Children's Hospital, Child-Life Unit, for over fifteen years. She also enjoyed a fast walk and each year entered the Cooper River Bridge Walk/Run with her son-in-law, Al.

She is survived by her children, Rita and Al Biggs of Columbia, Robin and Jerry Weesner of Columbia, Ray and Dianne McKay of Columbia and Randy and Susan McKay of Isle of Palms; she also leaves five grandchildren, Julie McKay Alford, Lindsay McKay, Randy McKay, Kelly Biggs Vivar and Eason Biggs, and two great-grandchildren, Mallery and Madelynne McKay, along with three stepgrandchildren, Lisa Weesner, Jerry Weesner Jr. and William Weesner; step-great-grandchildren, Jacob, Grant, Gary and Jennifer Weesner and Alexandra Vivar; step-great-great-granddaughter, Kayla. She was predeceased by a grandson, Miki McKay, and a stepgrandson, Mark Weesner. She is survived by a brother, Doug Plowden of Greenville; her sister, Susie Strand of Chicago, Illinois; and sisters-in-law, Margie Plowden of Columbia and Ruth McKay Stewart of Sumter, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews. Jean was also an animal lover and will be missed by her little dog, Macky.

Even though Jean lived a long and fulfilling life, she was fortunate to also have a wonderful man enter her life seven years ago. She and her sweetheart, Maxcy Jacks of Simpsonville, were inseparable and were an inspiration to couples of all ages. Maxcy was her rock and was loving, faithful and dependable and brought her nothing but true happiness. Her family would like to thank him for bringing such joy to her life and staying beside her when her life became so difficult.

Her family would also like to thank the staff on the 3rd floor at Providence Hospital along with Dr. Vaughn Barnick for their support, sensitivity and care. A special thank you goes to her caregivers and friends, Bettye Adger and Connie Bookman, for their selfless devotion to her well being.

A memorial service will be held Sunday at 5 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Palmetto Richland Children's Hospital, Child-Life Center, 5 Richland Medical Park Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
