He was born November 7, 1930, in Charlottesville to the late Wilson and Fannie Tinsley.
William was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Pattie; one son, William Wilson Tinsley Jr.; two grandchildren, William Cobbs and Christina Harris; a brother, Walter Tinsley; and a sister Annabel Douglas.
As a devoted and faithful member of Free Union Baptist Church, he was very active in the church and the community. William held many offices in the Yorkrite Masonic Family. He retired as a Maintenance Supervisor at Wade Apartments Land Trust. He also proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
William leaves to cherish his fond memories his devoted children, Pauline E. Cobbs and her husband, John Sr. of Charlottesville; Joan T. Harris and her husband, Daniel Sr. of Fort Washington, Maryland; Mary Etta Jackson of Richmond, Virginia; Michael A. Tinsley and his wife, Angela, of Fredericksburg, Virginia; two brothers, Robert Lee Tinsley Sr. of Charlottesville and Leroy Tinsley of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; one brother-in-law, George D. Moore of Augusta, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Margaret Nokomis Butterfield of Austell, Georgia; a special friend, Barbara Poindexter; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a host of foster children, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Zion Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Mary Carey officiating.
