He was born in Caswell County, N.C. on Feb. 20, 1935 and was the youngest son of the late Ord Cooper and Della Rigney Cooper. He graduated from Bartlett Yancey High School and served his country in the U.S. Army National Guard. In the mid 1960's he join the Caswell Messenger and served as Managing Editor until 1982. He was active in community affairs throughout Caswell County, serving as a Scoutmaster to Boy Scout Troop 190. He was on the Board of Deacons of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville, N.C. and was with the Yanceyville Volunteer Fire Department. He later served with the Chamber of Commerce in Danville, Richlands and Wytheville, Va. At the time of his death he was employed by Media General Corporation as Publisher of the Community Newspapers of Southwest, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Penelope Vernon Cooper; two sons, Samuel Lloyd Cooper of the home and S. Keith Cooper and wife Vickie of Charlotte, N.C. and a daughter, Donna Lynn Hilton and husband Jay of East Haddam, CT; two sisters, Thalia Bradley of Orlando, Fla. and Jane Walker, of Reidsville, N.C.
Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 31 at 1 p.m. at Purley United Methodist Church by Rev. Norman Wilhoit. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
