Abel was from Worth County, Georgia and enlisted on July 9, 1861 with Co. G, 14th Georgia Infantry, "The Yancey Independents." Appointed 4th Corporal in 1864, he was captured at Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA on May 5th of that year and sent to the prison at Point Lookout, MD. On July 27, 1864, he was tranferred to the prison at Elmira. He died from pneumonia caused by the horrible conditions of this infamous P.O.W. camp.
