William served in the U.S. Army in World War I and joined the Charleston Light Lagoons in 1915. He served on the Mexican Border and in France with the Headquarters Troop, 30th Division. He was President of the Charleston Produce Distributors, which he helped form in 1932. He was a member of the Charleston Yacht Club and was President for a number of years of the Dorchester County Free School Board.
