Born Louella Coleman McKelvey, in Itawamba County, Mississippi on June 21, 1856, to William Randolph McKelvey, Alabama and Sarah Ellla Wall McKelvey, Alabama.

In 1877 she married Milton Lafayette Duncan, Mississippi 1856. They farmed in Lee County, Mississippi and began their family there; but around 1884, they migrated westward through East Texas and into Texas Hill Country. Finally they settled in Mason County, Texas, where they remained into the 1920s. When Louella's health failed due to pellegra, she was moved to Howard County, Texas, where she could receive appropriate care.
According to the 1900 US Census of Mason County, Texas, only four of their nine children survived to adulthood. Children born of this union include:

1. Minnie Ella Duncan, b: 1879 in Lee County, Mississippi d: Unknown - before 1886
2. Charles Emmitt "Charley" Duncan, b: May 9, 1885 in Kaufman County, Texas d: March 16, 1956

Louella died in Big Spring, Howard County, Texas on December 21, 1926 of pellagra and her burial was on December 22, 1926 near Coahoma, Howard County, Texas in the Salem Cemetery . She was survived by her husband, M.L. Duncan, four children, numerous grandchildren, several siblings and a large extended family.
