HEMPHILL- On January 17, at his residence 401 South Church Street, West Chester,
Robert Coleman Hemphill, Sr., in the 79th year of his age.

R. Coleman Hemphill, Sr.

On Tuesday evening R. Coleman Hemphill, Sr., died at his residence, on South
Church Street, from a gradual decay of his bodily powers, he having been in
failing health for two or three years past.

Deceased was born on February 23, 1809, and was consequently nearly 79 years of
age at the time of his death. He was a son of the late Judge Joseph Hemphill
and Margaret Coleman Hemphill. His father was the first President Judge of the
old District Court of Philadelphia and at one time represented the Second
Congressional District to Congress.

R. Coleman Hemphill, Sr., was the last survivor of several children and has made
his home in West Chester since 1850. He was twice married. Only one of the
children by his first wife survives him, R. Clifford Hemphill, Jr., the present
crier of the courts of this county. His second wife and three children two
daughters and a son, also survive him, they having all made their home with him
up to the time of his decease, and cared for him tenderly during his last
illness.

Deceased was form many years a member of the First City Troop of Philadelphia
and held the rank of Color Sergeant. On his mother's side he was related to the
Colemans who were engaged in the Iron business in Lebanon county.



The death certificate says he died at West Chester, PA.

He was married twice: 1) Martha Bryant or Bryan, and 2) Mary Caldwell.
