Obituary, Putnam Courier, Carmel, NY, Nov. 17, 1933: James William Griffin, for eight years assessor in the town of Putnam Valley, and re-elected for the office this month, died at his home on the Oscawana Lake road, Oregon, Monday, Nov. 13, 1933, as a result of a stroke. He was born in Philipstown, June 18, 1862, a son of Jacob and Sarah Ann Odell Griffin. For fifty years he made his home in Oregon. He was a carpenter by trade and a staunch Republican. For eight years he was assessor Putnam Valley. He belonged to the Putnam Valley Grange No. 851 P.& H. for 25 years. He was also a member of Yorktown Lodge No. 191, Odd Fellows and would have completed fifty years in membership next month. He had held every office in the lodge. On Feb. 11, 1908 he was married to Mary Tompkins. They celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary last Feb. She survives with a son, James Stanton Griffin, of Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Bracken, of Oregon, NY. He also leaves a brother, Alvin Griffin of Tarpon Springs, Florida. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery.
