Floretta Richardson Boyd, of Mullins, died Monday, March 30, 2009, following an extended illness. She was 79.

Mrs. Boyd was a native of Marion County, the daughter of Manning Humbert Richardson and Fleetie Mae Martin Richardson of Brittons Neck.

She graduated from Furman University with highest honors and taught in junior and senior high schools in Lake City, Hartsville, Asheville and Greenwood. Floretta also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Forth Worth, TX, where she pursued a Masters degree in Religious Education. She served as a home missionary in Arkansas, New Mexico and New Orleans.

Mrs. Boyd was active in church and community pursuits. She served faithfully at Mullins First Baptist Church as Women's Missionary Union director and as Sunday School teacher of adults for many years. She was honored in 2008 when a WMU group was renamed the Floretta Boyd Group. She was also a past member of the Marion County Historical Society. Mrs. Boyd was a dedicated Christian, an exceptional teacher, a loyal friend and a devoted mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John Herbert Boyd, a daughter, Sharon Lynette Boyd Lancaster of Mauldin; two grandsons, Matthew Benjamin Lancaster and Jonathan Thomas Lancaster of Mauldin, whom she adored; and a sister, Odessa Rishardson Zoerb of Kingsport, TN.

She was predeceased by her brother, Carroll Richardson and her son, Timothy Martin Boyd.
