On April 27, 2003, Deputy Toney Summey was killed in the line of duty while attempting to serve domestic violence warrants. Deputy Summey was 41 years old and is survived by his wife and two children. He was a four year veteran of the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.


Deputy Toney Clayton Summey, age 41, of 2238 Ross Wood Rd., Trinity died Sunday, April 27, 2003.

Deputy Summey was a graduate of East Davidson High School. A former truck driver, he completed his law enforcement rookie school while still employed with American Freightways. He joined the Randolph County Sheriff´s Department in 1999. He was a member of New Heights Baptist Church in Trinity and was a member and served on the Board of Directors of the Tabernacle Fire Department. He was a participant and fund raiser for Operation Red Sleigh.

He is survived by his wife Dena Faye Tucker Summey; daughter: Megan Summey of the home; son: Andrew Summey of the home; parents, Lois & Clayton Summey of Thomasville, NC; grandmother, Evelyn Summey of Trinity, NC; mother & father-in-law, Jerry & Reva Tucker of Silver Valley, NC.

The body will lie in state at Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro from 9:00 am Wednesday, April 30, 2003 until 1:00 pm Thursday, May 1, 2003. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 30, 2003 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Pugh Funeral Home, 437 Sunset Avenue, Asheboro, NC. The funeral will be Thursday, May 1, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Balfour Baptist Church, 1644 North Fayetteville Street, Asheboro with Rev. Roger Porter, Dr. C. Dwight Ayers, and Sheriff Litchard Hurley officiating. Burial will be in Pierce´s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Asheboro.
