John Edward "Jack" EARL is the oldest son of Edward and Frances EARL. He was born in Mitchell, South Dakota. He was baptized at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket, South Dakota. He was known to his family as "Jack" but on most documents he is John.
In 1900 John and the family are living in Logan, South Dakota. William has not been born yet. In 1903 the EARL'S move to Salem, Oregon.
In 1910 John is 15 and living with his parents and siblings in Salem, Oregon. John is attending school. His two older sisters are working at the Woolen Mill. In March 1917 John and Susan BENNETT marry in Portland, Oregon. They were married at the Court House. In June 1917 John registers for the draft. In 1918 he is serving in the Oregon Militia as a private of the 6th Separate Co. of the Infantry. On April 26th 1919 he receives an Honorable Discharge. His Discharge papers also state that he had prior service as a Private in Company "F" First Regiment in the Oregan Guard. I have tried to find more information about his service but so far I have been unsuccessful.
In 1920 John and Susan with Frances and Ernestine are in Quinby, Oregon. In 1929 we find them in the Eureka City Directory both John and Susan are working in the Woolen Mill.
By 1930 not much has changed except Barbara is listed. John and Susan are still working at the Woolen Mill. This is this first census I find the NUTTER family. The NUTTER'S are living on Albee Street. William and Marie are also working at the Woolen Mill. I can only guess that is where the EARL'S and NUTTER'S met.
In 1940 John and Susan divorce and in the census we find John living with Frances and her first husband, Raymond REEDY. John is still working at the Woolen Mill and so are William and Marie NUTTER as well as Susan. I do not know when William and Marie NUTTER divorce. By 1942 John is living in Benicia, California and has filed his WW ll Draft Registration Card. This card states he is living at 223 East L Street [this is the address for Marie MACHADO in the 1950 census] and working for the US Government at the Benicia Arsenal and that he has a "crippled little finger on right hand". He lists his sister Marie MACHADO, also living in Benicia, as someone who "will always know your address". In 1944 John and Marie NUTTER marry. Their marriage record states they are both residents of Benicia. Ernestine ALLEN and Gilbert J. NUTTER were their witnesses.
In 1950 John and Marie are living at 228 E. M street [later Military East]. John is a carpenter at the Ordnance Dept. and Marie is a clerk at the Navy Ship yard. In 1958 John and Alfred were in a serious Jeep accident. They were hunting and Alfred and John fell into a 20 foot trench while Alfred was driving at night. Both men had broken bones but Alfred's injuries were the worst. John injured his back and neck and sustained a broken ankle. They won their case and in 1962 were awarded $70,000 in damages and lost wages. I have looked through the entire 1950 census for Benicia and notably missing are the MATTINGLY'S that lived next door to John and Marie and were such good friends to them and also Marie's sister, Bernadette. I have found a passenger ship list for 1947 that shows Bernadette coming to the United States but have not found anything else for her.
