Artemas Coffin Scribner and his sister, Caroline "Carrie" Augusta were born in Maine (probably Waldo County) to Horatio G and Margery Elizabeth Spinney Scribner. By 1855, the family had moved and were farming in Osceola Township, Stark County, Illinois. Their mother passed away between July 1860 and November 1861 at which time Horatio married Hannah Scholes, widow of James Scholes.

Both Artemas and Carrie attended the Illinois Industrial University.

On May 17, 1877, their father, aged 55 years, died of consumption near Bradford.

By 1884, the siblings were residing in Colorado near their uncles Dr. Anson Barlow Spinney, Nicholas S Spinney, Joseph O. H. Spinney, and Benjamin F. Spinney, ranchers and miners. Their mother's half-sister, Viola Almatia Spinney-Harrington and family, were also living in the same area.

Artemas, on May 1885, made a homestead entry containing errors which may have led to his death (see attached). "On April 24, 1891, E.O. Fyffe, the owner of a ranch near Fairplay, Colorado, shot O. C. Scribner, a sheepman, through the head with a winchester rifle instantly killing him. Scribner was running his sheep on Fyffe's range." July 6, 1891, Mr. Fyffe was sentenced to thirty years in the penitentiary at hard labor.
