Connie Velma Cole, 92, of Hillsboro, Ore., died of complications of a stroke on March 17, 2009. She was born Jan. 9, 1917 in Bohmer, Okla. She grew up in Texas, then moved to California and eventually moved to Portland. She married Chris Cole, and the two moved to Waldport, where they spent many years together until his death in 1992.
She remained in Waldport until August 2008, when due to failing health she moved to be near family in Hillsboro.
She was a colorful character who could be spotted from a distance wearing her unique hats. She had a great sense of humor and loved animals, feeding every stray that came along and even adopting some. She even made special trips to feed the crows. She had a big heart and though she had a small income, she gave on a regular basis to numerous organizations. She was also a Protestant who loved the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Cole, and son, Teddy Sellers. She is survived by her daughters, Connie Corona of Red Bluff, Calif., Mary Ellen Bastian of Aloha and sons, Clinton Leonard of Gresham and Herman Leonard of Fresno, Calif.
