John Robert Bilgrav of Metuchen died Monday (5/23/2005) at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 60 years old. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he resided in Perth Amboy for ten years before settling in Metuchen in 1955. A business major graduate of Middlesex County College, he served two tours of duty in the US Air Force as a Staff Sergeant during the Vietnam conflict. Bob had been employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Edison since 1978, and also delivered papers for the Newark Star Ledger. He was a member of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Metuchen. An avid fisherman, Bob also was a member of the Central Jersey Bicycle Club, the Pleiku Air Base Association, an Assistant Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America Troop 74, and a past member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife of 25 years Dorothy Clark Bilgrav; 2 sons Andrew Carley Bilgrav and Thomas Albert Bilgrav, both of Metuchen; his mother Elizabeth “Betty” Bilgrav Volpe of East Brunswick; brothers Douglas Carley Bilgrav of Blairs, VA, Brian Richard Bilgrav of Sayreville, and step brother William Volpe Jr. of Highland Park. Private cremation services will be handled under the direction of Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, Metuchen. A Memorial Service will be held 11 am Saturday at St. Lukes Episcopal Church.
