Daughter of Matilda "Tildie" Fish and James Phillips. She married Joel W. Barnes in 1910 and they had six known children.

Barnes; sons Sherman, Edward, Roosevelt and James Barnes, all of High Point, and Junior Barnes of Washington; daughters, Mrs. Ted Dorsey of Newport, Tenn., Mrs. Akers Hankins of High Point, and Mrs. Bill Kirkman of Rt. 5; sister Mrs. Tave Gates of Newport, Tenn.
