He is the son of John (Jona) and Sarah Shockley. His father came to Monroe Co., GA from Maryland according to family tradition. It is believed that he married at least 3 times.
Catherine 'Katie' C Jennings was the 2nd wife, followed by Eliza Ann Ivey. John serves as Postmaster, in Barnesville, beginning in May 1869. His known children, missing from the list herein, were Katie and Frank.

Mr John R Shockley died at his home in the city at half past five o'clock Friday morning. He was seventy two years of age, the greater portion, of which, was spent as a resident of Barnesville. He had been quite feeble for several years and his death was no surprise.
His funeral occurred at his residence on Zebulon Street Saturday morning, from which his remains were interred in Greenwood Cemetery.
