Arnell was born in Tennessee, the firstborn child of George Alexander and Susie Grubb Bearden. She moved to Oklahoma at an early age, maybe following the death of her mother. During the time of World War II, she worked for the United States Maritime Commission. She also aided George in searching family records. She had lived in Texas and Washington D.C.
For a time in the 1920's Arnell taught Language at Whittier School in Muskogee, following 8 years experience elsewhere.
During those years, she was known as Arnell Lane
