Death Notice:
passed away Saturday, April 2, 2005 at his home. Jim was born May 6, 1933 in Kalamazoo, the son of Franklin and Mary (Drolet) Abbott and lived in Kalamazoo, Otsego and, for the last 24 years, in the Gobles area. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the US Air Force and was a life member of the VFW. Jim worked at Allied Paper for 15 years and was a rural route carrier for the US Post Office for 26 years, retiring in 1993. He was a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus, Paw Paw, and an active member of St. Jude Parish, Gobles where he served as an Usher and Eucharistic Minister and was involved in the Engagement Encounter, Ministry Formation, RCIA, and Marriage Preparation programs. Jim enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, reading and gardening. Surviving are his wife, Marlene, whom he married March 8, 1961 in Galesburg; 5 children, Cathy Skiver of Galesburg, Frank (Chris) Abbott of Paw Paw, Dawn (Rob) Coulter of Chantilly, VA, Cecile (Mark) Thompson of Sacramento, CA, Mike (Carol) Abbott of Paw Paw; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a twin brother, Jack (Charlene) Abbott of Gobles; 2 sisters, Ruth Locey of Kalamazoo, Harriet (Dave) Kaiser of Peterborough, NH; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Keith, a son-in-law, Mike Skiver, 3 brothers, and 1 sister. The family will meet friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the GOBLES CHAPEL, D. L. Miller Funeral Home www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com with a rosary by the Knights of Columbus at 7:30 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Thursday at St. Jude Parish, Gobles with Fr. Robert Creagan, celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Margaret's Cemetery, Otsego.
