Columbus first married Selma Celinda Plott who died in 1854. He married Emeline Smathers in 1858, four years later.

In addition to the children listed below, Columbus and Emeline also had a daughter named Alena Angeline "Cenia" Rogers, born 01 Jun 1869 in Upper Crabtree, Haywood County NC and died 13 Dec 1956 in Natural Bridge, Rockbridge County, VA. She is buried in an unknown cemetery there, as is her husband Lebo Medford McElroy, whom she married in 1885. Lebo was born 05 Mar 1867 in Iron Duff, Haywood County, NC and died 04 Sep 1947 in Natural Bridge.
