Funeral services for Rodney Howard Hollis, 62, who died February 14, 2009 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, will be 11 a.m., Saturday at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Council Grove, Kansas. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Council Grove.
Visitation will be Friday at 6 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, followed by a Rosary at 7 pm.
He was born Jan. 4, 1947, at Hutchinson, KS, the son of Harold and Mills (Emberton) Hollis. They preceded him in death.
Rodney was raised and graduated from high school in Great Bend, KS. He earned his Bachelors of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Kansas in 1970 and his Masters of Counseling from Emporia State University in 1989.
He taught American government and history at Augusta High School, 1970-73, worked for Santa Fe Railroad out of Wichita and Emporia from 1973-89, had been an elementary school counselor in USD 417, Council Grove, from 1989 to 2008, and had taught anthropology, cultural geography, and had served as student advisor for Butler County Community College-Council Grove from 1995-2008.
Rodney was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Council Grove, Morris County Child Health Care, participated in community theatre in Council Grove and Augusta, belonged to the Council Grove Arts Council, volunteered at the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve, a delegate for KNEA, and was certified to be a mediator for the courts.
Survivors include his wife, Jerre of the home; son, Todd and his wife, Penny Hollis, and their two children, Katie and Jackson of Augusta; and daughter, Cari Hollis, and her fiancé, Doug Eichholz, and three children, Ryan, Nataly, and Chase of Topeka, Kansas.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Morris County Child Health Care, the USD 417 Counseling Dept. for student materials and programs, Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve/Education Programs, or the Morris Co.
