Note: Joseph S. Bartlett fled Washington Co. AR early in the Civil war because of hostility of his Confederate neighbors. He went to Dunklin County MO where son George was then living. In spite of his Union leanings, he enlisted as a Chaplain in the MIssouri 7th Cavalry, Confederate, in which his son George was serving as a surgeon. The unit was formed in July 1863 and in September 1863 Joseph S. Bartlet submitted his resignation and was relieved of duty in October 1863. Two other sons also served in the Confederate Army.

Note: GOODSPEED'S HISTORY OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI, p. 1065. This source says that he had 9 children. However, there are 10 likely children which leaves a puzzle. Perhaps in interviewing George for the article he was asked how many sisters and brothers he had, and the notes of the interviewer failed to adjust the number to include George himself. Or perhaps one is a grandchild.

The following is from an obituary of Samuel Houston Mays who says his father Samuel Mayes who was b. TN, immigrated to Indian Territory in 1837 and settled at . . .
"Muddy Springs, about three miles from the present town of Stilwell, at which afterwards was a school operated by the Cherokee Government, and at that place a Methodist camp ground. The following persons taught at this school: William Penn Adair, William Fields, Joel B. Mayes, Sophia Vann, a man from Arkansas by the name of Bartlett, a Yankee from New England by the name of Edison, another Yankee from New England by the name of Gilbert, Mrs. Carrie Bushyhead Qaurrels and Warren Adair. He and his brothers were educated at this school and at the Cherokee Male Academy, near Tahlequah."

Note: In 1844, and 1847, J. S. Bartlett was listed as a teacher in the Cherokee Nation's Public Schools. In 1844 and 1845 he is listed in Skin Bayou District [present day Sequoyah County]. In 1844 he was at school #1 in Skin Bayou; There were two schools in Skin Bayou - one at Sweetwater and one at John Benge's. Later in 1844 he is listed as the teacher at Muddy Springs in Flint District. The 1847 list is linked by number to a map which is missing in the Oklahoma State Archives. Bartlett was listed as being at school #11. Material found in the desk of Dr. Joseph Warren Bartlett says that in 1850 he was teaching at "Clear Springs."
Note:
Goodspeed's History of Southeast Missouri, in an article about George T., states that the family moved to Arkansas in 1842 and moved to Dunklin Co. MO because of the hostility of his neighbors in Washington Co. It further states that 4 of the sons of Joseph were in the Confederate army. Five of the sons were of an age to be in the war: These would be John P., George, Joseph W., William and Burtholf.
This biography of George also states that there were 9 children of Joseph S. Bartlett. Ten are listed with them on census records. The last child Bertolf. was born when Amanda was 47.
