NANCE > Harriet Christine Lewis Nance died peacefully while resting on February 19, 2009 at the age of 93 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born on October 5, 1915 in Ashburn, Georgia to Charles and Emma (Mobley) Lewis.

Harriet moved to Jacksonville as a young girl with her mother and two sisters to live with her Aunt. She graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in 1934 and continued to attend reunions and get-togethers with her classmates.

Harriet had a love of learning and attended college at both Jacksonville University and Tulane University and her scholastic enthusiasm never diminished. Harriet enjoyed her position as the Medical Staff Director at Baptist Hospital from 1972-1985 and greatly contributed to the service the hospital provided. She continued her service at the hospital and care for others as one of the famous "Pink Lady" volunteers at Baptist for many years. Harriet was a founding member of San Jose Baptist Church and charter member of San Jose Country Club. She was appointed to the Library Board by Mayor Hans Tanzler. She also assisted in the formation of the Jacksonville Symphony as well as in the consolidation of Duval County.

She was a member of the Community Chest of Jacksonville and the Southside Women's Club. On July 10, 1952, she married Robert Frank Nance. Harriet and Bob enjoyed family life with the blessing of two beautiful children, Barbara Ann and Robert Flynn. The family very much enjoyed traveling, especially to University of Georgia football games and The Masters golf tournament. In retirement, Harriet was able to pursue her passion of travel and continued the pursuit of life-long learning visiting many places including Europe, Israel, Egypt, and China and discovering the different cultures and histories of those places held. She also spent quality time and summer holidays with family and friends in Daytona Beach and Keystone Heights.

She is predeceased by her husband Bob Nance in 1995, her mother Emma (Mobley) Lewis in 1981, her sisters and brother(s)-in-law, Albion and Emelyn (Lewis) Watson in 1974 and 1984, and Margaret (Lewis) and Bob McCord, in 1997 and 2008.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Larry and Barbara (Nance) Kurz of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Flynn and Susan Nance of Conyers, Georgia, all of her grandchildren, Randy and Allison (Kurz) Gallup, Thomas and Melissa (Kurz) Johnson, Andrew Kurz, Emily Nance, Robert Nance, and Grace Nance, and great-grandchildren William Keegan Gallup and Emma Harriet Gallup, her nieces Ann Dennis, Pat Kerley, and Peggy McCord, and nephews Alan McCord, George Watson, and John Watson and many great-nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered for her love of people, her infinite wisdom and being the consummate hostess by her many wonderful friends over all of the years from Baptist Hospital, San Jose Baptist Church, the Carriage Club, and many others. We would all like to thank the many magnificent dedicated caregivers at the Carriage Club, St. Luke's Hospital, and McGraw Hospice Center for their love and compassion and unending support for the family. In her last words she said, "No sad service for me for I had a wonderful and happy life, a great husband, two wonderful children, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many, many great relatives and friends."

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2009, at San Jose Baptist Church, with Reverend Terry Gore officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue. In lieu of flowers, Harriet has requested that donations be made to the Division of Blind Services, 1809 Art Museum Drive, suite 201, Jacksonville, FL 32207, or a charity of your choice.
