Mr. Darling passed away at Heart of Florida Hospital on Sunday, August 18, having entered the hospital Tuesday due to a heart attack.
Born July 18, 1887 at Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, he was 81 years of age. He had made his home in Haines City since 1952, having moved here from Philadelphia, PA.
He had served a number of years in the United States Navy, aboard many ships, one of which was the USS Maine. He also was on duty at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Pensacola during its construction.
Following his service career, he became a motorman for the Philadelphia Transportation Company. Upon his retirement from this company, he moved to Haines City, FL.
He had managed the Haines City Municipal Trailer Park at Lake Eva for eight years, had served as President of the Haines City Tourist Club for 2 years, and for a number of years had managed the suffleboard activities of the Tourist Club. He was an active player and manager up through the immediate past winter season, taking art in many area, disrict and state tournaments at which he had won several trophies. He was also a member of the Tourist Club Cribbage team that had often won district honors and championships.
At the time of his passing, he lived at Minerva Trailer Park, Haines City, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Ida May (b. 1/23/1893 d. 5/29/1969), of Haines City. Their only child, Nelson Elias Darling (b. 3/2/1910 d. 8/21/1961) married Freda Elise "Babe" Bruck (b. 7/8/1913 d. 3/27/1999) and they lived in Philadelphia, PA. Survivors are three grandchildren, Thomas B. Darling of Annapolis, MD; David S. and Susan E. Darling of Philadelphia; two great-grandchildren, Donna Rae and Thomas W. Darling of Annapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Thomas W. Leach and Mrs. M. T. McAuliffe of Haines City; one brother Roy D. Darling of Buffalo, NY; a number of nieces and nephews, one of which is Mrs. Marjorie L. Jaeger of Haines City.
