SGT MAJ, US MARINE CORPS KOREA & VIETNAMLeland D. Crawford was the 9th Sergeant Major of the United States Marine Corp from Aug 15, 1979 until June 30, 1983.

Born in Sharon, WV on Feb 16, 1930, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in Sept 1951 and did recruit training at Parris Island, SC.

Upon finishing recruit training he did Infantry Training School at Camp Pendleton, CA and after this training was sent to Korea where he was a rifleman and artillery man with the 1st Marine Division.

From June 1956 to Oct 1958, he was a drill instructor at Parris Island. In Oct 1958 he was assigned to the 1st Marine Brigade in Hawaii. From Oct 1961 to Feb 1964 was again a drill instructor this time at the Recruit Depot in San Diego.

In Feb 1965, while serving with the 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa he was sent to Vietnam and in Mar 1966 was prompted to First Sergeant with Headquarters Company, where he served until 1967 when we returned to Vietnam. It was during this time that we earned the Bronze Star with Combat "V" and later received a Purple Heart for wounds received in Jun 1968. He also received the Distinguished Service Medal.

During his long career with the Marines he also served as First Sergeant Ceremonial Color Guard (1968-1970), Sergeant Major of the 2n Battalion 1st Marines (1971-1974), Sergeant Major of the Recruit Training Battalion 1976 and Group Sergeant Marine Division Feb 1977.

He became Sergeant Major of the 1st Marine Division in May 1979 and served until he was selected as Sergeant Major of the Marine Corp on Aug 15, 1970. He retired on Jun 20, 1983.
