During World War II, Bruce was assigned to the 30th Bombardment Squadron, 19th Bombing Group, US Army Air Corp. Per the Quartermaster General, Washington D.C, he died on May 18, 1942, age 21, while on active duty in the Philippine Islands.
As many soldiers were, Bruce initially was buried in the United States Armed Forces Cemetery, Manila No. 2, Philippine Islands, Cemetery Code# 7747, Grave# 1972, Row# 16, Plot# 2.
In March 1949, at the request of his family, Bruce was disinterred and transported to the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Oakland, California, then transferred for final interment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, Point Loma, San Diego, California.
This young man bravely gave his life for his country.
