Farmer, grocery clerk, and operator of a rooming house. He joined the Union army at age 18 during the Civil War serving in Company A, 78th Illinois Infantry Regiment. He sustained wounds to the left arm and shoulder but served through the duration of the war. He married schoolteacher, Clarinda Dark in Schuyler County on Dec. 28, 1881. No known children.

He has two stones--one that matches his wife, and the other is the military stone which recognizes his Civil War service.
