Mrs. Mary Jane Kalinka-nee Mary Jane Sasse, the oldest child of Charley and Mariah Sasse, pioneer settlers of Chariton county was born at Brunswick, Missouri, September 27, 1845 or thereabout, and departed this life July the 21st, 1934.
At an early age, she with her parents moved from Brunswick and located on what is now known as the Sasse farm south of Dalton. When attaining the age of womanhood she united in marriage with Henry Steiman, also a life long citizen of Chariton county and to this marriage three children were born, namely, Charles W.; John W.: and Mary Henrietta. Of these the two latter departed this life in childhood.
February the 21st, 1870, Henry Steiman died, having lived upon the farm southeast of Dalton. Then after a term of years of widowhood the deceased united in marriage with Frank Kalinka of Saline county, Missouri, who passed away May 27, 1907, and to this marriage were born three children, namely Carrie and Will Henry, and also a son who died in infancy.
Mrs. Kalinka spent her long and useful life within Chariton county and in later years became her delight in conversing with those who chanced to visit her, upon things reminiscent-historical facts concerning development of the County and of the many incidents of which she had knowledge of relating to pioneer life of such who took an active part in the upbuilding of this section of our State.
It fell to her lot, to have received an early Christian parental training and in due time she was confirmed in the Lutheran church. Later in life, she cast her lot with the church within her community where she lived, namely the Immanuel M. E. Church, and here she did what she could, and her delight was for the services she rendered during her life time to others.
Besides her children she leaved to mourn her departure 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, one sister Mrs. George Hechler of Dalton and many friends.
The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Eugene Goetz of the Immanuel M. E. Church, assisted by the Rev. H. E. Burton of Dalton and burial was at the Dalton cemetery.
