Mary Samantha Fortney was born in Preston County, the daughter of Barton W. Fortney Sr. & Emily (Squires) Fortney. As a result of a romance with Albert W. Pell, on 15 September 1875 she had two fraternal twins out of wedlock, Draper Fortney & Verner Peter Fortney. Albert joined the army, left West Virginia for Montana, and became a career soldier. On 13 September 1888, Mary married widower Joshua Hickman Burgoyne in Preston County. Joshua & Mary had three children, Oscar Sherman Burgoyne, Agnes (Burgoyne) Hall, & Ezra Grover Burgoyne Sr.
