Vernice E. Leighty, 89, Newry, died Sunday at The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg. She was born in Clearfield to Jesse and Clara (Reimer) Nycum. She married Paul C. Leighty Feb. 28, 1948, in Newry and he died July 22, 1998. Survived by son, Ronald and wife, Maureen, and two granddaughters, Heather and Sara Leighty, all of Newry; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by sisters: Erma Stitt and infant, Frieda Mae Nycum; brother, Lt. Col. Harold Nycum; and Helen Bowers, who was raised with Vernice's family. Member of Newry Lutheran Church, former Sunday school teacher and choir director. She also was a member of the Women's Evangelical Lutheran Church Assn. and the Allegheny Lutheran Home Aux. Mrs. Leighty enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially her two granddaughters, Heather and Sara. Liebegott-Brown Funeral Home, Duncansville. Interment, Alto Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona.
