Ralph Edgar Abernathy, Jr.

Connelly Springs, N.C. - Ralph Edgar Abernathy Jr., 60, of Connelly Springs, passed away Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Valdese Hospital in Valdese.

Born April 28, 1948, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Ralph E. Abernathy Sr. and Mabel Taylor Abernathy.

Mr. Abernathy was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church and a former member of Penelope Baptist Church. He was self-employed as an auto machinist and served in the U.S. Navy with the Seabees during the Vietnam War.

He was a loving father and husband and had a love for cars and drag racing.

Mr. Abernathy is survived by his wife, Libby Houston Abernathy of the home; daughter, Beth Ann Abernathy of Mountain View; son, Rodney Edgar Abernathy of Connelly Springs; stepson, Marty Lynn Barnes of Connelly Springs; stepdaughter, Monica Kelly Duncan of Marion; brother, Zane Grey Abernathy of Connelly Springs; sister, Loretta Zae Deal of Hickory; three stepgrandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Penelope Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Grinnell officiating.

Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park, with military honors provided by members of American Legion Post 48.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Pallbearers include Randy Abernathy, Ronnie Cook, Rusty Hoyle, Scott Abernathy, Adam Phillips and Ricky Denny.
