Stephen Austin Miller, 22, son of Mrs. Ike Miller of Athens, was fatally burned Saturday morning about 7 o'clock when the transport truck he was driving was in an accident about three-quarters of a mile out of Freeport on the Houston-Freeport highway. Miller was taken to a Freeport hospital by a passer-by, and died there Saturday afternoon at 1:55 o'clock.
Mr. Miller was on a regular run from Houston to Freeport. Members of the family said from information they were able to gather, the truck apparently left the pavement, hit a telephone pole and later crashed into a tree. The driver jumped from the truck when it hit the telephone pole, but returned to it after it hit the tree to get some papers. He was covered with gasoline and in some manner his clothing became ignited, resulting in third degree burns all over the body except the feet and around the waist. He was alone.
Mr. Miller had been employed by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad as a truck driver for about nine months, except for a short time when he was in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received a medical discharge about three weeks ago and went back to work for the Missouri-Pacific. He resided in Houston.
He was born in Athens on November 25, 1921, and is a former student of Athens High School.
Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Katherine Loveless of Athens; two children, Stephen Dwain and Regina Ann; his mother; five brothers, Hubert of Athens, Robert of Garland, LeRoy of Houston, Homer, stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas with the Army, and Ike Miller Jr., stationed in San Diego, California with the Marines, and one sister, Mrs. Cleo Quisenberry of Dallas.
The body was brought to Athens, arriving Sunday night at 9 o'clock, and was met by the Carroll and Lehr Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home of C.B. Gould on the Tyler highway, with the Rev. W.B. Oliver, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in the City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert Montgomery, C.H. Montgomery, E.J. Loveless, Chester Gould, Earl Harris and Tim B. Montgomery.
