Sergeant Porter, of Brighton, Massachusetts, was raised in the Fidelis Way projects of Brighton. At the age of 8, he came under the wing of Craig Meyer, a volunteer for the Big Brother Program. Craig served as a role model and mentor for Marquis for 2 decades. Marquis graduated from the private college preparatory Beaver Day School in Chestnut Hill, MA attending the school with a full academic scholarship. In school he was on the wrestling and lacrosse teams. He joined the Marine Corps on June 9, 1998, the day after he graduated, a dream he had since his childhood. Marquis was an avid reader and well educated, always searching for answers to questions. His favorite television shows growing up were educational and he had personal goals of being a responsible adult. He completed two previous tours of duty in Iraq, and also was stationed in Japan, Germany, London and Kuwait during his service. While stationed at Twentynine Palms, California, he met Desha and five years ago when he was transfered to Camp Pendleton, they moved to Hemet, California. He and Desha married on January 17, 2003. Marquis was currently serving his third tour in Iraq as a radio operator assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, N.C. He died as a result of a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq. His awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with two bronze stars in lieu of a third award, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a gold star in lieu of a second award, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with three bronze stars in lieu of a fourth award, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He is survived by his family: wife Desha Porter; daughters Madisyn McKinsey and Victoria Isabella Porter; brother Billy, Donald, Dee Jackson, Craig (Eleanor) Meyer; sisters Donna and Celiz Jackson.
