Pvt Flavius Josephus Sleezer was one of seven killed in the Battle of Elizabethtown during General John Hunt Morgan's "Christmas Raid" on 27 Dec 1862. He was originally interred in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery in E'town. Later in the Spring of 1867, his remains were removed to Cave Hill National Cemetery - Section D, Site 3501. He also has a memorial stone erected in his honor at the family cemetery in Kendall County, Illinois.
Flavius served the Union side while living in Lisbon, Illinois. The original enlistment date was 11 Aug 1862. He enlisted as a Private in the US Army Civil War and joined the 91st Infantry Regiment Illinois, Company E, on 8 Sep 1862. Rank in: Private; Rank out: Private.
Flavius was killed three months and 21 days later in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, at the age of 18. He was buried that day in the City Cemetery, Section 57, Number/Range 3, Stake/Cross 84 (240). Later in the Spring of 1867, his remains were removed from there and interred in Cave Hill National Cemetery in Louisville, Plot: Section D, Site 3501.
There were 15 citizens from Flavius' small hometown of Big Grove that joined the 91st Regiment, Co E. Of these 15, four are known to have been killed in the War.
