He was born at Coddle Creek, Cabarrus County, but moved to Greenville, SC as a young man. He married Besse Godfrey (1900-1990), a daughter of John Wallace Godfrey and his wife Letitia Roberts. Lamont, as he was called, and Besse had two children, Ernest Lamont Field, Jr. (living in Greenville, SC), and the late Nancy Bell Field (1925-1998, Mrs. James Oliver Hodges IV). Ernest was a pharmacist in Greenville, SC for many years, and vice president of the Five Points Pharmacy.
