Prior to the war, William Elliott worked for William H. Croucher, a grocer and baker in Newport, and was assitant scoutmaster for the Castlehold Boy Scout troop.

William was serving with 115 Squadron, based at RAF Marham, and was due to be deployed to Malta as an observer on a Vickers Wellington, when the plane struck a barrage balloon cable and crashed, with the loss of all five crew.
