Sergeant Lawton was one of seven RAF airmen who lost their lives when 1661 HCU's Short Stirling III bomber caught fire, broke up and crashed on the Co-operative Farm at West Thickley, Shildon in County Durham. The Stirling and its crew had taken flight from RAF Wigsley in Lincolnshire and were on a training exercise when the aircraft went down.
The seven airmen who perished in this accident were-
Sergeant Fred BATES,
Flying Officer John McCallum BROOKS,
Sergeant Nathaniel Hugh CRAWFORD,
Sergeant Donald Wilfred CURTIS,
Sergeant Walter Joseph LAWTON,
Sergeant Thomas PARR and
Pilot Officer Stanley Raymond WILSON.
