Maria Elizabeth Canaan was a daughter of Israel Canaan and Martha Hisey. Maria married Thomas Melvin Hemphill on 18 Mar 1869 in Grant Twp., Mecosta County, Michigan. The ceremony was performed by her father-in-law, Samuel Corydon Hemphill. After her death, Maria's family transported her body to Oaklawn Cemetery in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from Georgia, so she could be buried next to her husband. One or both of Maria's parents are also buried in Oaklawn Cemetery in Hattiesburg.
Two of Maria's sisters also married two of her husband's brothers:
1. Priscilla Ann married Samuel Hinton Hemphill, and
2. Alice Caroline married Robert Tillman Hemphill.
Thomas and Maria had the following children:
a pair of twins who died as infants;
Martha Eleanor Hemphill, b. 30 October 1871, d. 2 Feb 1945;
Arthur Hemphill, b. 1873, d. 19 Oct 1881;
Robert Herman Hemphill, b. 10 August 1876, d. 23 April 1941;
Herbert Augustus Hemphill, b 10 March 1880, d. 4 March 1930;
Goldie Hemphill, b. 2 Nov 1887, d. 8 Aug 1889, buried at Oaklawn.
