Jim was born on March 17, 1929 in Houston, TX, to James R. Barker and Mary Lucille Christian Barker. He graduated from the Lamar High School in Houston in 1947 and graduated from the University of Texas, South Texas College of Law, and William Howard Taft University with degrees in Pharmacy, Law, and CPA. Jim was very active in the Democratic Party of South Texas and Liberty County. The majority of his professional life was spent as owner and pharmacist of retail pharmacies in Liberty and Houston. His love of education led him to become qualified as an attorney at law, certified public accountant and realtor.
Jim was a devoted member and supporter of many professional, social and charitable organizations, including Kappa Sigma Fraternity; Sons of the Republic of Texas and Sons of the American Revolution. At various times in his life, Jim was honored to fill leadership roles in many of these organizations; he was a Master Mason of the Masonic Lodge, vice-chair and chair elect of the Texas Pharmaceutical Association, a delegate of the American Pharmacists' Association, and President of the Liberty Lions Club. Other organizations that contributed to the fullness of Jim's life were the Rotary Club, FirstUnitedMethodistChurchof Liberty, and Boy Scouts of American. Jim was also a member of the Chancellor's Council and Leadership Society of the University of Texas.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Wanda Lou Penick Barker. He is survived by his son, James R. Barker III and his wife Lisa, three daughters, Cina Barker Guthrie and husband John, Gayla Barker Hayes and husband Mark, and Starla Barker, Grandaughters; Joan Guthrie Hawkes, Courtney Guthrie Boullion, Marla Hayes Schmitz, Kaylee Barker, Stephanie Barker, and Katelyn Barker, Grandsons; Christian Gordon, James Barker IV, and Evan Barker, and a host of other family members and friends.
