Joseph Pierce Huggins
(January 17, 1932 - December 24, 2008)

Mr. Joseph P. Huggins, 76, of Blackshear, GA, died early Wednesday morning at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Mullins, South Carolina to the late John Lawton Huggins and Lucille Wiggins Huggins.

He graduated from Presbyterian College where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduating from Presbyterian College he coached one year at Warren County before moving to Waycross.

Joe came to Waycross in 1955 as a teacher and assistant football coach under head coach Dub Kendrick for Waycross High School. After coaching he operated Hiers Timber Products for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. At First Methodist he taught the Youth Sunday School Class, was a member of the Sid Ruff Sunday School Class, and served on numerous church committees. In the community Mr. Huggins was a member of the Jaycees, Elks Lodge and the Okefenokee Golf and Country Club. He joined Okefenokee in 1956 and began serving on the board of directors in 1959. Joe served numerous times as President of Okefenokee Golf and Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Huggins, of Blackshear, two daughters, Holli Sweat and her husband Jim of Blackshear, Jolie Chaney and her husband Jay of St. Simons Island, two twin grandchildren, Taylor Sweat, Chase Sweat, of Blackshear, three brothers, Norman Huggins and his wife Mary June of Valdosta, Jim Huggins and his wife Ann of Mullins, South Carolina, Dr. Kenneth Huggins of Walterborough, South Carolina, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A memorial service will be held 11 am, Saturday at First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:30 am, in the church library on Saturday. Members of the Sid Ruff Sunday School Class and the Chancel Choir have been asked to serve as honorary pallbearers and should gather at the church by 10:45 am.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice Satilla, 317 Plant Ave., Waycross, Georgia 31501, Satilla Regional Medical Center, 410 Darling Ave., Waycross, Georgia 31501, or First United Methodist Church, 410 Williams St., Waycross, Georgia 31501.
